Balm of Gilead
36"x36", oil on wood panel, 2024. Original Available $700. Prints also available.
Balm of Gilead is an ancient healing ointment made from the buds of any poplar species. It has a beautiful balsam scent (like pure sunshine) and is one of my favorite wildcrafted medicines. The cottonwood tree's circuitous branches make it particularly beautiful to paint.

Humbaba
24”x36”, oil on wood panel, 2020. SOLD. Prints available
Humbaba is the name of the cedar forest guardian from the Epic of Gilgamesh, the first known written story in history. In some translations, Humbaba is a menacing, dangerous spirit, and in others, a nurturing protector of the forest. I am certain this depends on your intentions with the forest and how connected to the natural world one feels. This cedar is from the Pacific North West, on Whidbey Island, Washington, USA. I infuse the work with brushwork and color to emphasize the life force within, rather than simply an aesthetic pleasure for the viewer.

Moss and Lichen on Old Growth Douglas Fir
48”x48”, oil on wood panel, 2020. Prints and Original available $800
The old growth rainforests of the Pacific Northwest are full of spirit, beauty and peace. I had the privilege of living among these forests for 20 years, though it truly was love at first sight. Even though less than 10% of these forests remain we have many staunch defenders, both indigenous and settler, to thank for acting to protect these universal treasures that would have been logged without their dedication, in the deep past and present. Perhaps in 900 years our ancestors can connect with us through the deep roots of these ecosystems because of the actions of these groups, as well as the many admirers who walk amongst the ancients and support the cause. Sending so much love and gratitude to each and every one of you that contribute to this work!
